Credit 101

Credit tips that actually move your score.

No gimmicks, no "secret loopholes." Just the levers that genuinely matter — and what you can do about each one yourself, starting today.

1

Keep your cards under 30% full

Utilization is the fastest lever you control. Using more than ~30% of a card's limit drags your score even when you pay on time. Pay balances down before the statement closes.

2

Never miss a payment

Payment history is the biggest factor in your score. One 30-day late can cost a lot and linger for years. Set autopay for at least the minimum on everything.

3

Don't close your oldest cards

Closing a card shortens your credit age and cuts your available credit (raising utilization). Keep old cards open and active with a small recurring charge.

4

Pull all 3 reports — free

You're entitled to free reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com. You can't fix what you can't see, and the three don't always match.

5

Dispute what's wrong — it's your right

Under the FCRA you can dispute inaccurate information yourself, for free. Only dispute things that are genuinely wrong — never try to remove accurate info as "fraud." See your rights.

6

Go easy on applications

Each application is a hard inquiry that can ding your score and signals risk when you apply for many at once. Space them out and only apply when you need to.

7

Rebuild with the right tools

If your file is thin, a secured card and a credit-union share-secured loan build history honestly. Skip "credit builder" fintech gimmicks that cost more and do less.

8

Spot the scams

No one can legally remove accurate, verifiable info. Walk away from anyone promising a "new credit identity," guaranteed deletions, or big upfront fees before doing any work. Real help is honest about what's possible.

9

Know that negatives age off

Most negative items drop off after 7 years (10 for bankruptcy). As they age, they weigh less. Time plus good habits is a real strategy, not a scam.
